One of the most effective ways to protect assets on property is through the creation of an Asset Protection Zone.
This is designed as an appropriately sized area surrounding the asset, such as a building, where the fuel has been reduced to a such a level that it will no longer support a bushfire.
An effective APZ acts as a break between the bushfire hazard (such as surrounding bush) and the asset.
An effective APZ provides a safe area for firefighters and landowners to fight a bushfire and protect assets.
APZs need to be designed correctly to maximise their effectiveness, and their long-term viability provided for in an effective Maintenance Program.
The RFS has developed a set of standards for Asset Protection Zones which you can download here.
